Winter Storm Warning (Jan 28 to 29)
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 7 p.m. Friday to 7 p.m. Saturday.

According to the latest forecast, a trace of snow is expected Friday as a nor'easter is expected to bring 9 inches to 11 inches of snow and 40 to 45 mph wind gusts (with peak gusts of 50 mph) to the area Friday night to Saturday night. There remains a low chance for higher amounts and stronger winds if the storm shifts.

  • The bulk of the snow is expected to fall from 3 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Saturday.
  • The strongest period of winds is expected between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday. A combination of gusty winds and arctic air will produce wind chills below zero during the day Saturday to late Sunday morning.
  • Localized minor coastal flooding possible during the three tidal cycles from Saturday morning to Sunday morning, particularly in low-lying coastal areas of southern Queens, north shore of Queens, and the Bronx.

The New York City Department of Sanitation has issued a Snow Alert for Friday, January 28th, beginning at 4 p.m. The alert is in effect through all of Saturday and into Sunday morning.

Open Restaurants Program
When the City issues a Snow Alert, Open Restaurants roadway dining must close by the time indicated in the Alert.

  • Furniture should be removed or secured, and electric heaters must be removed.
  • Remove the tops of structures, if possible.
  • If the forecast calls for 12" of snow or more, remove or consolidate structures, including barriers, to take up as little space as possible. This makes plowing easier and protects property.

Open Streets Program
To facilitate snow clearance operations, Open Streets will be suspended tonight Friday January 28th at 8pm until further notice. Open Streets partners should remove barriers starting at 8pm, or earlier. NYC DOT will alert all partners when Open Streets may restart.
